The Commedia Rapunzel

Ragtag Theatre Company is a Commedia dell’ Arte troupe dedicated to bringing fresh and unique live LGBTQ theatre designed for the entire family! In short, we do fairytales. But not yo mama's fairytales. We do fractured fairytales that spoof and riff off of pop culture... (much like Animaniacs or Shrek), and we do it all in the style of Commedia dell’Arte, which is an early style of Italian street theatre that incorporates big funny characters, improvisation, and direct audience involvement all in one. Our shows are audience interactive and the kids are integrated into every performance, making them feel uniquely important in this theatrical experience. Ultimately, our goal is the make you laugh and create a safe space where you can be yourself and #beweird with all of us. Through our crazy camp and comedy, we hope to empower and inspire all youngins and grown folk alike to embrace what makes them different.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the theatre!

BAM! Another fairytale!

From the same company that brought you "The Commedia Rapunzel," Ragtag Theatre Company is back with their latest fairytale spoof: "The Commedia Cinderella"...and this time...pumpkins will fly girl! Expect the unexpected in this wild ride of participatory theatre that is crazy fun for the entire family. Come get yer Spring Cleaning on!!

"You and your little one have never seen a version of Rapunzel quite like this!"

Time Out New York

"Perfect for all ages and people attending, with or without kids in tow."

Out Magazine

"Embrace your inner weirdness in this slap-happy merging of Commedia and the fairy tale Rapunzel! No matter what—no matter how ugly or dumb or strange you feel—just be yourself. Stop judging people! Open you mind! Be weird! The folks behind The Commedia Rapunzel took this note. And, hey, you should too."

Theatre is Easy

"I’m always looking for ways to get my kids excited about theater. Thankfully, there are shows like Commedia Rapunzel that entertain all the people in my home and inspire them to pursue their own artistic endeavors."

City Dads Group

"As much for the parents as it is for the kids!!"

Douglas Carter Beane (Xanadu,
To Wong Foo..., The Little Dog Laughed)

"It’s rare for a man with no children to say he’s looking forward to seeing a children’s theatre show, but I said just that last year in anticipation of The Commedia Cinderella, and I wasn’t disappointed. The same is true for The Commedia Rapunzel, which opened this past weekend at Columbia Children’s Theatre, and which is in many ways a sequel to last year’s production. Both were written and directed by Sam LaFrage, who also plays multiple roles, designed both set and sound effects, composed original music and lyrics, and for all we know, probably then fights crime dressed as a bat. LaFrage has created a wacky, family-friendly re-telling of the timeless tale from the Brothers Grimm."

Onstage Columbia

"The Spaghetti and Meatball Players seriously need to get out of town—and take The Commedia Rapunzel with them. And that’s not a bad thing. Columbia Children’s Theatre should take this hair-raising (or rather, lowering) show on the Commedia dell’Arte road, and see if they can pull a Muppets Movie and make their way to writer-director Sam LaFrage’s transplant home with that little street you may have heard of, called Broadway. The Commedia Rapunzel is the funniest play I have seen in years."

Jasper Magazine

"It may be possibly be the funniest version of Cinderella every presented on stage. This Cinderella is a much better much more modern role model for young girls than has been presented in previous versions of the story."

"Families looking for something different, or simply tired of the sometimes too predictable and too sweet children's theater, will love this fairy tale twist."

Mommy Poppins

"Billed as LGBTQ theatre designed for the entire family, this show puts a refreshing and much appreciated new spin on the timeless fairytale, finding a way to speak to the individual heart of every member of the audience."
